This lesson combines argumentation skills with two key grammar points: passé composé vs imparfait in arguments and depuis / il y a.
Using past tenses in arguments: When supporting your opinion with past examples, choose carefully:
- Passé composé for completed events: *Les réseaux sociaux ont changé notre façon de communiquer.*
- Imparfait for describing how things were: *Avant, les gens se parlaient en face à face.*
- Combined: *Quand j'étais jeune, on n'avait pas de smartphone. Tout a changé en dix ans.*
Depuis vs Il y a:
- Depuis = since / for (ongoing): *Je suis sur Instagram depuis 2018.* / *Depuis trois ans, j'utilise moins les réseaux.*
- Il y a = ago (completed): *J'ai créé mon compte il y a cinq ans.* / *Il y a deux ans, j'ai supprimé Facebook.*
Key difference: *depuis* implies the action continues; *il y a* marks a past point in time.

Je suis sur Instagram depuis cinq ans il y a.Je suis sur Instagram depuis cinq ans.Don't combine 'depuis' and 'il y a' — use one or the other.
Il y a trois ans, je suis sur TikTok.Je suis sur TikTok depuis trois ans.For ongoing situations, use 'depuis' (not 'il y a' with present tense).
Quand j'étais jeune, j'ai utilisé Facebook.Quand j'étais jeune, j'utilisais Facebook.Use imparfait for habitual past actions, not passé composé.
Les réseaux sociaux ont changé depuis toujours.Les réseaux sociaux ont toujours changé.'Depuis toujours' doesn't work with passé composé. Restructure the sentence.
Depuis j'ai commencé, je suis addictif.Depuis que j'ai commencé, je suis accro.Use 'depuis que' (not 'depuis') before a clause, and 'accro' for addicted (person).
