Writing a Message

Formal vs. Informal

French writing has different registers:

Formal (email, letter):

*Bonjour Madame / Monsieur,* — Hello Madam / Sir,
*Cordialement,* — Best regards,
*Je vous prie d'agréer...* — Very formal closing

Informal (text, chat):

*Salut !* — Hi!
*Bisous* — Kisses
*À +* (à plus) — See you later

Common Text Abbreviations

*slt* = salut (hi)
*bjr* = bonjour (hello)
*stp / svp* = s'il te/vous plaît (please)
*mdr* = mort de rire (LOL)
*rdv* = rendez-vous (meeting/date)
*bcp* = beaucoup (a lot)

Writing a Simple Email

Structure: 1. Greeting: *Bonjour,* 2. Purpose: *Je vous écris pour...* (I am writing to...) 3. Body: Your message 4. Closing: *Cordialement,* 5. Name: Your name

"Écrire" — To Write

Irregular verb: *j'écris, tu écris, il écrit, nous écrivons, vous écrivez, ils écrivent*
