격식체와 비격식체

어휘

한국어에서도 상대와 상황에 따라 해요체, 합니다체, 반말을 고르지만, 영어는 보통 문장 구조와 어휘를 바꿔 격식을 조절해요. 같은 뜻이라도 표현 방식이 크게 달라질 수 있어요.

고급 영어는 강조하거나 격식을 높일 때 도치를 써요.

Rarely do we encounter such sophisticated discourse. → 이런 수준 높은 담론은 좀처럼 접하지 않아요.
Not only did she present the data, but she also challenged the methodology. → 그녀는 자료를 제시했을 뿐 아니라 방법론에도 이의를 제기했어요.
Under no circumstances should the document be shared externally. → 어떤 경우에도 그 문서를 외부와 공유해서는 안 돼요.
Seldom has the committee reached consensus so swiftly. → 위원회가 이렇게 빨리 합의한 일은 드물어요.

한국어는 조사나 어순으로 초점을 옮길 수 있지만, 영어는 부정 부사가 문두에 오면 조동사 + 주어 순서로 바꿔요.

친근한 말: Can you help me out? → 격식 있는 말: Would you be so kind as to assist me?
친근한 말: The plan failed. → 격식 있는 말: The proposal proved ineffectual.
친근한 말: He is really good at his job. → 격식 있는 말: He demonstrates exemplary professional competence.

관료적 표현, 외교적 표현, 학술적 표현은 서로 달라요. C1에서는 상대가 아니라 상황에 맞는 격식을 고르는 감각이 중요해요.
