영어 과학 논문을 읽는 순서
한국어 논문도 초록과 결론을 먼저 훑듯이, 영어 논문 역시 구조를 알고 읽으면 훨씬 빨라요. 국제 학술지는 대체로 IMRAD 흐름을 따라요.
- Introduction: 연구 배경, 선행 연구의 빈틈, 가설
- Methods: 절차, 참여자, 자료 수집 도구
- Results: 데이터와 결과
- Discussion: 결과 해석, 한계, 시사점
- Conclusion: 핵심 정리와 다음 과제
학술 영어의 명사화
영어 학술문은 동사나 형용사를 명사로 바꿔 더 압축적이고 비인칭적으로 써요.
- investigate → the investigation of
- discuss → a discussion of
- analyse → the analysis of
"We investigated how stress affects memory." → "The investigation of the relationship between stress and memory reveals..."
한국어도 분석하다를 분석으로 바꿔 문체를 조절하지만, 영어에서는 이런 명사화가 특히 중요한 학술 문체의 신호예요.
C1 읽기 전략
1. abstract를 먼저 읽어요. 2. 결론에서 핵심 결과를 확인해요. 3. discussion에서 의미와 한계를 살펴봐요. 4. methods로 신뢰도를 평가해요.
표현

- The findings suggest that...확정하지 않고 결과를 제시

자주 하는 실수
The research concludes that sleep is good.The research suggests / indicates that sleep deprivation may impair cognitive function.학술 글은 모호하거나 단정적인 주장 대신 suggest, may 같은 완화 표현을 써요.
The author investigated about memory.The author investigated memory.investigate는 about 없이 직접 목적어를 받는 타동사예요.
The conclusion is the same like the hypothesis.The conclusion is consistent with / corroborates the hypothesis.same like는 틀려요. 학술 영어에서는 consistent with, corroborates, supports를 써요.
The methodology was very good.The methodology was robust / rigorous / well-designed.학술 맥락에서 very good은 너무 구어적이에요. robust나 rigorous처럼 구체적으로 말해요.
The article was peer-reviewed by two persons.The article was reviewed by two independent reviewers.persons보다 people 또는 reviewers가 자연스러워요. 동료 심사는 독립 심사자가 해요.
The study was made on 500 participants.The study was conducted on 500 participants.학술 영어에서는 make a study가 아니라 conduct a study라고 해요.
