논증 에세이의 구조
좋은 영어 에세이는 서론, 본론, 결론의 세 부분으로 명확하게 구성해요.
1. 서론
- 독자의 관심을 끄는 도입 문장을 써요.
- 주제의 일반적인 배경을 제시해요.
- 논제 (
thesis statement)로 자신의 입장을 한두 문장으로 밝혀요.
"While technology has transformed modern life, its impact on privacy raises serious concerns." → "기술은 현대 생활을 바꾸었지만, 사생활에 미치는 영향은 심각한 우려를 낳아요."
2. 본론 단락 (body paragraphs)
각 단락은 PEEL 구조로 써요.
- Point: 핵심 주장
- Evidence: 예시나 자료
- Explanation: 이것이 논제를 어떻게 뒷받침하는지 설명
- Link: 다음 단락으로 이어 주는 전환

- 더 넓은 관점이나 질문으로 마무리해요.
학술 에세이의 첫 문장을 "I think..."나 "In my opinion..."으로 시작하지 마세요. 먼저 맥락을 제시해요.

자주 하는 실수
In my opinion, I think that social media is bad.Social media has been shown to have negative effects on...학술 영어에서는 'In my opinion'과 'I think'를 함께 쓰면 중복돼요. 비인칭적이고 사실에 근거한 표현을 써요.
This proves that my thesis is right.This supports the argument that... / This suggests that...학술 맥락에서 'proves'는 너무 단정적이에요. 'supports', 'suggests', 'indicates'처럼 완곡한 동사를 써요.
In conclusion, I talked about three things.In conclusion, this essay has argued that...결론에서는 무엇을 말했는지 나열하지 말고 논제와 근거를 간결하게 다시 정리해요.
In one hand, this is good; in other hand, it is bad.On the one hand, this is good; on the other hand, it is bad.정해진 표현은 'on the one hand... on the other hand'예요.
Firstly, I will talk about the environment. Secondly, I will talk about economy.Firstly, I will discuss the environment. Secondly, I will discuss the economy.격식 있는 에세이에서는 'talk about'보다 'discuss'를 쓰고, 'the economy'처럼 관사를 써요.
