간단한 간접화법 (Reported Speech)
누가 한 말을 옮길 때는 간접화법을 써요. 여행 중에 상황을 설명할 때 아주 쓸모 있어요. 한국어는 '-대요, -냬요'처럼 어미 하나로 처리하지만, 영어는 동사와 시제를 함께 바꿔야 해요.
"told" (누구에게 말하다)
told + 사람 + that의 순서로 써요.
- He told me that the flight was delayed.
- She told us that we needed a visa.
"Told" 뒤에는 늘 듣는 사람(me, him, her, us, them)이 필요해요.
"said" (말하다)
said + that으로 쓰고, 듣는 사람은 넣지 않아요.
- He said that the hotel was fully booked.
- She said the bus left at 8 am.
"That"은 자주 생략해요. "He said the hotel was full"도 맞아요.
"asked" (묻다)
질문을 옮길 때는 asked + if/whether를 써요.
- She asked if I had travel insurance.
- He asked whether I could speak English.
주의하세요. 간접화법에서는 어순이 평서문으로 돌아가요. 의문문 어순은 쓰지 않아요.
시제가 한 칸 물러나요
보통 동사가 한 시제 뒤로 물러나요.
- "The flight is delayed" → He said the flight was delayed
- "We can help you" → She said they could help us
표현
- He told me that...누가 나에게 한 말을 옮길 때
- She asked if...질문을 옮길 때
- I'd like to report a problem문제를 공식적으로 신고할 때
- Is there any way to get a refund?환불을 정중히 물을 때
- I need to contact my embassy해외에서 큰일이 생겼을 때
- To get ripped off바가지를 쓴 것 같아요.
- To be stranded공항에 발이 묶였어요.
- To report a theft경찰서에 도난 신고를 했어요.
자주 하는 실수
He told that the flight was lateHe told me that the flight was late'told' 뒤에는 듣는 사람(me, him, her, us, them)이 필요해요.
She asked did I have insuranceShe asked if I had insurance간접화법에서는 if를 쓰고 어순도 평서문으로 돌려요.
He said me that...He told me that... / He said that...'said'는 사람을 바로 목적어로 받지 않아요. 그럴 때는 'told'를 써요.
They said the bag is coming tomorrowThey said the bag was coming tomorrow간접화법에서는 동사가 한 시제 물러나요(is → was).
I have lost my passport yesterdayI lost my passport yesterday'yesterday'와 함께 쓸 때는 과거형을 써요.
Can you help me for find it?Can you help me find it?'help' 뒤에는 to도 for도 없이 동사원형이 와요.
