문화 차이를 말할 때 B1에서 아주 쓸모 있는 구조가 몇 가지 있어요.
"In my country, we..."
내 문화를 소개할 때 쓰는 구조예요.
- In my country, we shake hands when we meet someone.
- In France, we usually kiss on the cheek to greet friends.
문화적인 일반 습관을 말하니까 단순 현재를 써요.
"Compared to..."
두 문화를 곧바로 견줄 때 써요.
- Compared to England, people in Spain eat dinner much later.
- Compared to Japan, dress codes in Australia are quite casual.
"Whereas..."
한 문장 안에서 대비를 드러낼 때 써요.
- In the UK, people queue politely, whereas in some countries, pushing ahead is normal.
- In Japan, bowing is a sign of respect, whereas in the West, people prefer handshakes.
Whereas는 "but"보다 격식이 있어요. 글에서든 말에서든 문화 비교에 딱 맞아요.
그 밖에 쓸모 있는 표현
- It is considered rude to... → ~하는 건 무례하게 여겨져요
- It is common to... → ~하는 게 흔해요
- People tend to... → 사람들은 ~하는 편이에요

- To adapt to그 고장 관습에 맞춰야 해요.

자주 하는 실수
In my country, we are shake handsIn my country, we shake hands단순 현재의 동작 동사 앞에는 be동사를 쓰지 않아요.
Compared with England, France is more formalCompared to England, France is more formal이런 자리에서는 'compared with'보다 'compared to'라고 해요.
It is considered rude do thatIt is considered rude to do that'it is considered rude' 뒤에는 'to + 동사원형'을 써요.
Whereas but in Japan...Whereas in Japan...whereas가 이미 but의 일을 해요. 둘을 같이 쓰지 않아요.
In my country, people is friendlyIn my country, people are friendly'people'은 복수라서 is가 아니라 are를 써요.
I am not habituated to thisI am not used to this일상 영어에서는 habituated가 아니라 'used to'라고 해요.
