Traps Even Natives Fall Into

Even native Dutch speakers make systematic errors. Mastering these pitfalls demonstrates true C2 command and will impress any Dutch listener.

The dt-rules are the most notorious. When a verb stem ends in -d, the second and third person singular may end in -dt: *hij vindt* (he finds), *jij wordt* (you become). The trap: in inverted questions, *word jij* drops the -t, but *vind jij* keeps it because -d is part of the stem. Many natives get this wrong.

Hen vs. hun is a battle even grammar guides debate. Traditionally: *hen* = direct object (*Ik zie hen* — I see them), *hun* = indirect object (*Ik geef hun het boek* — I give them the book). In practice, many Dutch people use *hun* for both or even as subject (*Hun hebben dat gezegd* — wrong, should be *Zij hebben dat gezegd*).

Als vs. dan in comparisons: *groter dan* (bigger than) is correct; *groter als* (bigger as) is incorrect but extremely common in speech. The rule: use *dan* after comparatives, *als* only for equality (*even groot als* — just as big as).

Hun as subject (*Hun hebben dat gedaan*) is considered incorrect by prescriptivists. The correct form is *Zij hebben dat gedaan* (They did that). However, this usage is so widespread it may eventually be accepted.

D/t at end of past participles: *Hij heeft gelopen* vs. *Het is gebeurd*. The rule: after a voiced consonant, use -d; after a voiceless one, use -t. The mnemonic is *'t kofschip* — verbs with stems ending in these consonants get -t.
