Dutch Punctuation & Spelling Finesse
At the C2 level, mastering Dutch punctuation conventions separates competent writers from truly polished ones. Dutch punctuation differs from English in several key ways.
Comma rules are perhaps the biggest area of divergence. Dutch uses fewer commas than English. There is no comma before "en" or "of" in lists (no Oxford comma). However, commas are required before subordinate clauses introduced by "maar," "want," and "dus." Before "dat" and "omdat," a comma is standard in formal writing.
Quotation marks in Dutch traditionally use double low-opening marks „zo" but modern usage increasingly accepts "zo" (English-style). Quoted speech typically uses a comma before the quote: Hij zei, "Kom maar."
The apostrophe is strictly limited in Dutch. It appears in possessives of names ending in vowels (Anna's boek) but NOT in plural forms — writing *auto's* is correct only because the base word ends in a vowel; *pizza's* follows the same rule.
Capitalization is more restrained than in English. Days of the week, months, languages, and nationalities are lowercase: maandag, januari, nederlands, de Nederlanders (but the people are capitalized).
Spelling conventions to watch: "ij" is treated as a single letter and both letters are capitalized at the start of a sentence (IJsland, not Ijsland). The trema (ë, ï) indicates separate vowel pronunciation: geïnteresseerd, coöperatie.
