Critical proofreading at C1 level means catching errors that even advanced learners commonly make in Dutch.
The dt-rule: The most notorious Dutch error. Present tense *hij/zij/u* always ends in *-t*: *hij vindt*, *zij wordt*. But in the imperative and past tense, there is no *-t*: *Vind je?* (Do you find?), *hij vond* (he found).
Common C1 errors:
- *hun/hen* confusion: *hen* (direct object), *hun* (indirect object). *Ik zag hen.* (I saw them.) *Ik gaf hun het boek.* (I gave them the book.)
- *als/dan* after comparisons: *groter dan* (bigger than), NOT *groter als*
- *dat/wat* in relative clauses: *het boek dat* (specific), *alles wat* (indefinite)
Advanced false friends:
- *actueel* means current/topical, NOT actual (= werkelijk)
- *eventueel* means possibly, NOT eventually (= uiteindelijk)
- *sympathiek* means likeable, NOT sympathetic (= meevoelend)
Consistency checks: Ensure consistent use of *u/jij*, spelling of compound words (one word vs hyphenated), and verb tense throughout your text.
