At C1 level, mastering register switching in Dutch is essential. Dutch has a clear distinction between formal (*u*) and informal (*jij/je*) address, but the choice goes far beyond pronouns.

Formal register (u-vorm):

  • *Zou u mij kunnen vertellen...* (Could you tell me...)
  • *Ik zou het op prijs stellen indien...* (I would appreciate it if...)
  • Used in official letters, business correspondence, and when addressing elderly people or strangers.

Informal register (jij-vorm):

  • *Kun je me even vertellen...* (Can you just tell me...)
  • *Ik vind het fijn als...* (I think it is nice if...)

Key differences extend to vocabulary: formal Dutch prefers *gaarne* (gladly) over *graag*, *dienen* (to be required) over *moeten*, and *verzoeken* (to request) over *vragen*. In modern Dutch, the *u*-form is declining in casual settings, but remains mandatory in official communication, healthcare, and legal contexts. Misjudging register can sound either overly stiff or disrespectfully casual.

표현

  • Zou u zo vriendelijk willen zijn...Formal: Would you be so kind as to...
  • Ik verzoek u dringend om...Formal: I urgently request you to...
  • Gelieve ons te informeren over...Formal: Please inform us about...
  • Doe maar gewoon, hoor.Informal: Just act normal / relax.
  • Het staat u vrij om...Formal: You are free to...
  • Wil je even kijken?Informal: Could you have a look?

자주 하는 실수

  • Kan jij mij helpen? (to a judge)
    Zou u mij kunnen helpen?

Using jij with a judge is inappropriately informal; u is required.

  • Ik wil graag dat u komt.
Ik zou het op prijs stellen indien u komt.

In formal writing, indirect phrasing is preferred over direct requests.

  • Geachte heer, hoe gaat het?
Geachte heer, ik hoop dat het goed met u gaat.

Hoe gaat het is too casual for formal correspondence.

  • U moet dit formulier invullen.
U dient dit formulier in te vullen.

Dienen is the formal equivalent of moeten in official instructions.

  • Ik vraag u om te antwoorden.
    Ik verzoek u te antwoorden.

Verzoeken is the formal alternative to vragen in official contexts.
