Dutch collocations are fixed word combinations that native speakers use naturally. At C1 level, knowing the right verb-noun pairing is what separates fluent speakers from advanced learners.

Why collocations matter: You cannot freely swap verbs. You *nemen* a decision (*een beslissing nemen*), you do not *maken* one. You *treffen* measures (*maatregelen treffen*), you do not *nemen* them. These pairings are idiomatic and must be memorized.

Common patterns:

  • Verb + noun: *een rol spelen* (play a role), *invloed uitoefenen* (exert influence)
  • Verb + preposition + noun: *een beroep doen op* (appeal to), *de voorkeur geven aan* (prefer)
  • Noun + verb: *de aandacht trekken* (attract attention), *schade aanrichten* (cause damage)

Formal collocations often differ from informal ones: *verantwoording afleggen* (formal: to justify/account for) vs. *uitleggen waarom* (informal: to explain why). Mastering these collocations is essential for sounding natural in professional and academic Dutch.
