Formal Conditional: Mocht u... & Formal Future
Dutch administrative language uses polite conditional forms and formal future constructions in immigration contexts.
Mocht u + infinitive at end (Should you...):
- Mocht u vragen hebben, neem dan contact op. — Should you have questions, please get in touch.
- Mocht u niet aan de voorwaarden voldoen... — Should you not meet the requirements...
This is more formal than als u and implies a hypothetical situation politely.
Formal future with zullen:
- Uw aanvraag zal binnen zes weken worden behandeld. — Your application will be processed within six weeks.
- De vergunning zal worden verlengd. — The permit will be extended.
Dient te for administrative obligations:
- U dient uw paspoort mee te nemen. — You are required to bring your passport.
- De aanvrager dient het inburgeringsexamen te halen. — The applicant is required to pass the civic integration exam.
Gelieve + te + infinitive is an ultra-formal request:
- Gelieve het formulier in te vullen. — Please fill in the form.
These constructions are essential for understanding official correspondence from the IND (Immigration and Naturalization Service).
