Music and Emotions: Participles as Adjectives
Dutch participles work as adjectives in two forms: the present participle (-end) describes the cause, while the past participle (-d/-t) describes the effect on someone.
Ontroerend (moving) vs ontroerd (moved): De muziek was ontroerend (The music was moving) vs Ik was ontroerd (I was moved). The music causes the emotion; the person experiences it.
Fascinerend (fascinating) vs gefascineerd (fascinated): Een fascinerend concert (A fascinating concert) vs Ik was gefascineerd door het concert (I was fascinated by the concert).
When used before nouns, add -e: een ontroerende melodie (a moving melody), de gefascineerde toeschouwer (the fascinated spectator). Exception: after een with het-words, no -e: een ontroerend lied (a moving song).
Common pairs: verrassend/verrast (surprising/surprised), teleurstellend/teleurgesteld (disappointing/disappointed), overweldigend/overweldigd (overwhelming/overwhelmed), boeiend/geboeid (captivating/captivated).
