Conditional 2: zou/zouden for Hypotheticals

The conditional mood in Dutch uses zou (singular) and zouden (plural) + infinitive to express hypothetical situations, polite requests, and wishes.

Formation

• ik → zou
• jij/u → zou
• hij/zij → zou
• wij/jullie/zij → zouden

Uses in Negotiation

1. Polite requests:

• *Zou u de prijs kunnen verlagen?* (Could you lower the price?)
• *Zouden we een afspraak kunnen maken?* (Could we make an appointment?)

2. Hypothetical proposals:

• *Ik zou 10% korting kunnen geven als u meer bestelt.* (I could give 10% discount if you order more.)
• *Wat zou u doen als we het contract verlengen?* (What would you do if we extend the contract?)

3. Softened opinions:

• *Ik zou zeggen dat dit een eerlijk aanbod is.* (I would say this is a fair offer.)

If-clauses with als

• *Als u akkoord gaat, zou ik de overeenkomst vandaag kunnen tekenen.* (If you agree, I could sign the agreement today.)
• *Als we zouden samenwerken, zou dat voordelig zijn.* (If we were to work together, that would be beneficial.)
