Getting Around: "met de..."
Transport with articles
In Dutch, always use met de + transport:
- met de bus (by bus)
- met de trein (by train)
- met de tram (by tram)
- met de metro (by metro)
- met de fiets (by bike)
- met de taxi (by taxi)
Tip: Dutch always requires the article. Never say ~~met bus~~ or ~~met trein~~.
"Nemen" for transport
- Ik neem de bus. (I'm taking the bus.)
- Welke tram moet ik nemen? (Which tram do I need to take?)
Compound words
Dutch loves compound words for transport:
- de bushalte — bus stop
- het treinstation — train station
- de tramhalte — tram stop
- het metrostation — metro station
- het fietspad — bike path
표현
- Ik ga met de trein.I'm going by train.
- Waar is de bushalte?Where is the bus stop?
- Ik neem de fiets.I'll take the bike.
- Welke tram gaat naar het centrum?Which tram goes to the city center?
- Kun je mij een taxi bellen?Can you call me a taxi?
- Het station is hier vlakbij.The station is near here.
자주 하는 실수
Ik ga met bus.Ik ga met de bus.Always use an article with transport: met de bus, met de trein.
Ik neem mijn fiets.Ik pak de fiets / Ik ga met de fiets."De fiets pakken" or "met de fiets gaan" are more natural than "nemen".
Waar is de halte van bus?Waar is de bushalte?Use the compound word "bushalte" (bus stop), not "halte van bus".
Het station is ver van hier.Het station is ver hiervandaan."Hiervandaan" (from here) is the natural phrasing.
