Telling time in Dutch
Dutch tells time differently from English! The key concept: half refers to the NEXT hour.
- 3:00 → drie uur (three o'clock)
- 3:15 → kwart over drie (quarter past three)
- 3:30 → half vier (half four = half TO four!)
- 3:45 → kwart voor vier (quarter to four)
Warning: "Half vier" means 3:30, NOT 4:30! This is the biggest trap for learners.
Asking the time
- Hoe laat is het? → What time is it?
- Het is drie uur → It is three o'clock
- Het is kwart over vijf → It is quarter past five
- Het is half zeven → It is 6:30
Minutes
- Tien over drie → 3:10 (ten past three)
- Vijf voor half vier → 3:25 (five before half-four)
- Vijf over half vier → 3:35 (five after half-four)

자주 하는 실수
Half drie = 3:30Half drie = 2:30"Half drie" means half TO three, so 2:30. This is the #1 mistake learners make!
Het is drie en halfHet is half vierDutch doesn't say "three and a half". Say "half vier" for 3:30.
Kwart na drieKwart over drieFor quarter past, use "over", not "na". "Na" means after in other contexts.
Het is veertien uurHet is twee uurIn casual speech, use 12-hour time. "Veertien uur" is only for timetables.
