Phone formulas
Dutch has specific phrases for phone calls:
- Met [naam]. — This is [name]. (Answering)
- Met wie spreek ik? — Who am I speaking to? (Asking identity)
- Kunt u dat herhalen? — Can you repeat that? (Didn't hear)
- Ik bel u later terug. — I'll call you back later. (Callback)
- De lijn is bezet. — The line is busy. (Line busy)
Formal "u" vs. informal "je"
On the phone, especially in professional contexts:
- Kunt u mij doorverbinden? (formal)
- Kun je me even helpen? (informal)
- Zou u een bericht willen achterlaten? (very formal)
Separable verbs
- opnemen (to pick up): Ik neem op.
- ophangen (to hang up): Ik hang op.
- terugbellen (to call back): Ik bel terug.
Tip: "Bezet" means occupied/busy (for lines). "Druk" means busy (for people).
