Code-Switching in Chinese

The ability to shift registers fluidly is one of the defining marks of C2 mastery. In Chinese society, the consequences of register mismatch can be socially damaging — speaking too casually to an elder or too formally to a close friend signals a failure of social intelligence.

Reading the Room (察言观色)

Code-switching begins before you speak. The key variables are:

  • Relationship (关系): boss/employee, elder/younger, stranger/intimate
  • Setting (场合): boardroom, family dinner, WeChat message, formal letter
  • Purpose (目的): inform, persuade, comfort, impress

Formal → Informal Switches

When switching from formal to casual, drop:

  • Classical connectors → use 但是 instead of 然而
  • Impersonal passives → use 我们决定 instead of 经研究决定
  • Honorifics → use 你好 instead of 您好

Informal → Formal Switches

When writing formally after casual conversation:

  • Replace 你 with 您 or remove subject entirely
  • Replace 因为 with 鉴于
  • Replace exclamation marks with commas or periods

China-English Code-Switching

A distinctly modern phenomenon: educated urban Chinese often mix English words naturally:

  • Feel一下 → have a feel / try it
  • OK啊 → OK then
  • schedule排得很满 → schedule is packed

This is accepted in creative and casual writing — not in formal contexts.

표현

  • 见人说人话,见鬼说鬼话Speak appropriately to whoever you meet
  • 看场合说话Speak according to the occasion
  • 把握分寸Maintain proper sense of propriety
  • 拿捏好语气Get the tone just right
  • 入乡随俗When in Rome, do as the Romans do
  • 知道说什么,也知道不说什么Know what to say and what not to say
  • 换位思考Think from the other person's perspective
  • 话要说到位Say exactly what needs to be said, no more

자주 하는 실수

  • 我跟老板说我累了。
    我向领导汇报说近期工作压力较大。

告知 a superior you are tired requires formal framing — 向领导汇报 and elevated vocabulary.

  • 您在哪里读书啊?
    您在哪所学校就读?

啊 is casual filler inappropriate with 您. With formal address, use complete formal phrasing.

  • 他给老师发了个微信,跟他说不来了。
    他向老师发送了信息,说明无法出席。

跟他说 in written reference is too casual. 说明 and 出席 elevate register appropriately.

  • 不来了
    无法出席

不来了 is starkly colloquial. 无法出席 is the formal, written equivalent.

  • 大家好,今天我们discuss一下这个问题。
    大家好,今天我们讨论一下这个问题。

Chinese-English mixing is not appropriate in formal meetings or academic presentations.
