Writing a Summary in Academic Chinese
Summaries (摘要) in Chinese academic writing are concise and impersonal. They follow a strict formula.
Key verbs for reporting
When summarising another author's view:
- 该文认为... / 作者指出... / 研究表明...
- X 认为，Y 现象的根本原因在于...
- 正如 Z 所言，... (As Z states...)
Paraphrase vs Direct Quote
Chinese academic writing prefers paraphrase over direct quotation. When paraphrasing:
- Change the structure, not just swap words
- Use 转述动词 (reporting verbs): 认为/指出/强调/指出/阐明/揭示
💬 Original: "语言是思想的直接现实。"（马克思）
Paraphrase: 马克思曾指出，语言与思维之间存在不可分割的内在联系。
Advanced reported speech (间接引语)
- Direct: 他说："这个实验是失败的。"
- Reported: 他承认该实验未能达到预期效果。
- Note: Tense does not shift in Chinese, but person and structure do.
Summary structure tips
- Start with the topic, not the author's name
- Use 针对...问题 (regarding the issue of...) to frame the subject
- End with the contribution: 该研究为...提供了新的视角/依据
