Nuancing your speech in Chinese
At B2 level, basic phrases like 我认为 (wǒ rènwéi) or 我不同意 (wǒ bù tóngyì) are no longer enough. Advanced Chinese uses sophisticated connectors to express nuance.
Contrast connectors
- 虽然…但是… (suīrán… dànshì…) — introduces a concession before the main point : *虽然结果令人鼓舞，但还需进一步研究。*
- 尽管…还是… (jǐnguǎn… háishi…) — stronger concession, the result persists : *尽管很疲劳，她还是出色地完成了演讲。*
- 然而 (rán'ér) — written-register "however" : *数据不完整；然而，仍可得出若干结论。*
- 反而 (fǎn'ér) — signals an unexpected opposite result : *我以为他会生气，他反而笑了。*
Degree adverbs
- 未必 (wèibì) — not necessarily : *这个方法未必有效。*
- 相对而言 (xiāngduì ér yán) — relatively speaking : *这相对而言还算合理。*
- 在某种程度上 (zài mǒu zhǒng chéngdù shàng) — to some extent : *在某种程度上，他说得有道理。*
Qualifying and clarifying
To avoid absolute statements:
- *值得注意的是…* — It is worth noting that…
- *这并不是说…* — This is not to say that…
- *就…而言…* — As far as … is concerned…

- 虽然…但是…To admit a point while maintaining your main argument
- 反而To signal an unexpected opposite outcome
- 然而To introduce a contrast in formal/written context
- 在某种程度上To partially agree without full commitment
- 未必To challenge an assumption without fully negating it
- 值得注意的是To draw attention to an important nuance
- 这并不是说To prevent a misinterpretation of your point
- 就…而言To narrow the scope of a statement
자주 하는 실수
虽然他很累，但是然而他继续工作。虽然他很累，但是他继续工作。Do not use 但是 and 然而 together — they are both contrast connectors. Choose one.
尽管下雨，我们还是出去了，反而玩得很开心。尽管下雨，我们还是出去了，而且玩得很开心。反而 signals an unexpected opposite result. Here the fun is not a surprise contrast, so 而且 is more appropriate.
这个问题未必是不重要的。这个问题未必重要。Double negation creates awkward phrasing. 未必 already implies uncertainty — keep it simple.
就中国而言，经济是发展很快。就中国而言，经济发展很快。No need for 是 in this structure. 就…而言 is followed directly by the predicate.
在某种程度上，我是同意你。在某种程度上，我同意你。同意 is a verb in Chinese, not an adjective — no 是 needed before it.
