司法の文脈における過去の受動態
司法制度では受動態が多用されます。行為者ではなく行為自体に焦点を当てるためです。
Was/Were + 過去分詞（過去単純受動態）
- He was convicted of fraud. → 彼は詐欺罪で有罪判決を受けた。
- She was sentenced to five years in prison.
Had been + 過去分詞（過去完了受動態）
- He had been acquitted before new evidence emerged.
司法文脈でよく使われる受動態構文
- The defendant was found guilty/not guilty.
- The verdict was delivered by the jury.
- An appeal was filed by the defence.
ポイント： 英語の法律用語では受動態が非常に多く使われます。客観的で非人称的なトーンを与えるためです。

よくある間違い
He was condemned to prisonHe was sentenced to prison法律英語では"sentenced"（刑を宣告された）を使います。"condemned"は道徳的に非難するという意味です。
The judge has done the verdictThe jury delivered the verdict評決を出す（deliver）のは陪審員であり、裁判官ではありません。
He made an appealHe filed an appeal法律用語では"file an appeal"であり"make an appeal"ではありません。
The evidences were clearThe evidence was clear"evidence"は英語では不可算名詞です。複数形はなく、動詞は単数形です。
The judge condemned him to five years.The judge sentenced him to five years.英語では司法の判決にはcondemnではなくsentenceを使います。
