形容詞の比較級

2つのものを比べるとき、英語では比較級を使います。

短い形容詞(1音節)は -er + than

  • big → bigger than(〜より大きい)
  • fast → faster than(〜より速い)
  • old → older than(〜より古い)

"This film is funnier than the first one." → "この映画は最初の作品より面白い"

長い形容詞(2音節以上)は more + 形容詞 + than

-er をつけるのではなく、形容詞の前に more を置きます。

  • interesting → more interesting than(〜より興味深い)
  • exciting → more exciting than(〜より刺激的)
  • beautiful → more beautiful than(〜より美しい)

"The documentary is more interesting than the comedy." → "そのドキュメンタリーはコメディより興味深い"

不規則な比較級

一部の形容詞は特別な形になります。

  • good → better than(〜より良い)
  • bad → worse than(〜より悪い)
  • far → further / farther than(〜より遠い)

"The sequel is better than the original." → "続編はオリジナルより良い"

同等を表す:as + 形容詞 + as

「〜と同じくらい」と言いたいときは、形容詞を as ではさみます。

"This film is as good as the book." → "この映画は本と同じくらい良い"

よくある間違い

  • This film is more better
    This film is better

    better はすでに good の比較級です。more を重ねてつけることはできません。

  • The book is more good than the film
    The book is better than the film

    good の比較級は不規則な better です。more good という形は使いません。

  • It is funnier that the first one
    It is funnier than the first one

    比較級では than(〜より)を使います。that と間違えないようにしましょう。

  • The film is most interesting
    The film is more interesting

    most は最上級(いちばん〜)に使います。2つを比べる比較級では more を使います。

  • The film was more longer than I expected
    The film was longer than I expected

    longer はすでに比較級なので、more を重ねてつける必要はありません。

  • It's the worse film I've ever seen
    It's the worst film I've ever seen

    bad の最上級は worst です。比較級の worse と混同しないよう注意しましょう。
