To compare things at the highest degree, Italian uses the relative superlative and the absolute superlative.
The relative superlative (the most... in/of...) is formed with the definite article + *più* + adjective + *di*: Il Colosseo è il monumento più famoso d''Italia. (The Colosseum is the most famous monument in Italy.) Roma è la città più visitata del mondo. (Rome is the most visited city in the world.) Questo museo è il più grande della regione. (This museum is the largest in the region.)
The absolute superlative is formed by adding the suffix *-issimo/a/i/e* to the adjective: Il duomo è bellissimo. (The cathedral is very beautiful.) Il quartiere storico è antichissimo. (The historic district is very ancient.) La fontana è grandissima. (The fountain is very large.)
Note: with *-issimo*, the final vowel of the adjective is dropped before adding the suffix.
