The Passive in the Present Perfect (pretérito perfecto pasivo)
In Spanish, the passive voice in the present perfect is formed with haber + sido + past participle. This structure is widely used in scientific language to describe discoveries and results.
Formation
Subject + ha/han + sido + past participle (+ por + agent)
- El virus ha sido identificado por los investigadores. (The virus has been identified by the researchers.)
- Las muestras han sido analizadas en el laboratorio. (The samples have been analyzed in the laboratory.)
Agreement
The past participle agrees in gender and number with the subject:
- La teoría ha sido demostrada. (feminine singular)
- Los resultados han sido publicados. (masculine plural)
Passive vs. Active
Compare:
- Active: Los científicos han descubierto una nueva especie.
- Passive: Una nueva especie ha sido descubierta por los científicos.
The passive is preferred when the action matters more than the agent, which is common in scientific texts.
