Asking and saying prices

The key question for prices in Spanish is ¿Cuánto cuesta? (How much does it cost?) for one item, and ¿Cuánto cuestan? for several items:

  • ¿Cuánto cuesta esta camiseta? — How much does this T-shirt cost?
  • ¿Cuánto cuestan estos zapatos? — How much do these shoes cost?
  • Cuesta tres euros con cincuenta. — It costs three euros fifty.

Decimal numbers and currency

In Spain, prices use a comma for decimals: 3,50 €. To say it aloud:

  • 3,50 € → tres euros con cincuenta (céntimos)
  • 12,99 € → doce euros con noventa y nueve
  • 0,75 € → setenta y cinco céntimos

Paying

Common expressions when paying:

  • ¿Puedo pagar con tarjeta? — Can I pay by card?
  • Pago en efectivo. — I pay in cash.
  • ¿Me da el recibo, por favor? — Can you give me the receipt, please?
  • ¿Tiene cambio de veinte euros? — Do you have change for twenty euros?

Ejemplo: "¿Cuánto cuesta este libro? — Cuesta nueve euros con noventa y cinco. — Perfecto, pago con tarjeta." — "How much does this book cost? — It costs nine euros ninety-five. — Perfect, I'll pay by card."
