Articles with body parts
In Spanish, body parts almost always use the definite article (el, la, los, las) instead of possessive adjectives:
- Me lavo las manos. → I wash my hands. (literally: "I wash myself the hands")
- Abre la boca. → Open your mouth.
"Me duele" / "Me duelen"
To say something hurts, use the verb doler (to hurt). It works like "gustar":
- Me duele + singular noun → Me duele la cabeza. (My head hurts.)
- Me duelen + plural noun → Me duelen los pies. (My feet hurt.)
Change the pronoun to talk about other people:
- Te duele → Your ... hurts (informal)
- Le duele → His/Her ... hurts
Example: "¿Te duele el brazo?" → "Does your arm hurt?"
Example: "Me duelen las piernas." → "My legs hurt."
