Formal vs Informal Register in Portuguese

The «tu» / «você» Distinction

European Portuguese has a rich system of address. Tu is used with friends, family, and peers. Você is more formal but less formal than o senhor / a senhora, which is the most respectful form.

Formal Inversions

In formal Portuguese, subject-verb inversion signals elevated register:

  • Disse o ministro (The minister said) vs O ministro disse
  • Será necessário rever (It will be necessary to review)

Register Switching

C1 speakers must seamlessly switch registers depending on context. A job interview requires o senhor/a senhora, while a follow-up email to a colleague may use tu or você.

Key Markers of Formality

  • Formal: subjunctive mood, passive constructions, nominalization
  • Informal: indicative mood, contractions ( for está), slang

Tip: In Portugal, using tu with strangers can sound rude. When in doubt, start with você and let the other person suggest switching.

वाक्यांश

  • Tenha a amabilidade de...Would you be so kind as to...
  • Agradeço que me informeI would appreciate being informed
  • Venho por este meio solicitarI hereby request
  • Com os melhores cumprimentosWith best regards
  • Faz favor, podes...?Can you please...? (informal)
  • Caro(a) Senhor(a)Dear Sir/Madam

आम गलतियाँ

  • Tu pode ir embora
Você pode ir embora / Tu podes ir embora

Mixing «tu» verb form with «você» — must match pronoun to conjugation

  • Obrigado senhor João
    Obrigado, Senhor Doutor João

In formal PT, titles like Doutor/Engenheiro are expected

  • Eu quero falar com o chefe
Gostaria de falar com o responsável

Too direct for formal register — use conditional + softer noun

  • Oi, tudo bem? (in a formal email)
Exmo. Senhor, Venho por este meio...

Informal greeting inappropriate in formal correspondence

  • Me diz uma coisa
    Diga-me uma coisa

Proclisis (me diz) is Brazilian; European PT uses enclisis (diga-me)

झटपट क्विज़
