Formal vs Informal Register in Portuguese
The «tu» / «você» Distinction
European Portuguese has a rich system of address. Tu is used with friends, family, and peers. Você is more formal but less formal than o senhor / a senhora, which is the most respectful form.
Formal Inversions
In formal Portuguese, subject-verb inversion signals elevated register:
- Disse o ministro (The minister said) vs O ministro disse
- Será necessário rever (It will be necessary to review)
Register Switching
C1 speakers must seamlessly switch registers depending on context. A job interview requires o senhor/a senhora, while a follow-up email to a colleague may use tu or você.
Key Markers of Formality
- Formal: subjunctive mood, passive constructions, nominalization
- Informal: indicative mood, contractions (tá for está), slang
Tip: In Portugal, using tu with strangers can sound rude. When in doubt, start with você and let the other person suggest switching.
