Understanding the Portuguese healthcare system requires the passive voice to describe how things are done.
Passive voice (ser + past participle):
- Os medicamentos são comparticipados pelo Estado. — Medicines are subsidised by the State.

- O SNS foi criado em 1979. — The NHS was created in 1979.
The past participle agrees in gender and number with the subject: A consulta foi marcada (fem.), Os exames foram feitos (masc. pl.).
