Estar a + Infinitive (Present Continuous)

In European Portuguese, the present continuous is formed with estar a + infinitive. This describes what is happening right now.

Formation

Eu estou a trabalhar. — I am working.
Ela está a escrever um relatório. — She is writing a report.
Nós estamos a ter uma reunião. — We are having a meeting.

When to use it

Actions in progress: "Estou a ler os emails."
Temporary situations: "Está a chover lá fora."
Current activity at work: "O chefe está a falar ao telefone."

Note: In Brazilian Portuguese, the form is "estar + gerúndio" (estou trabalhando). European Portuguese uses "estar a + infinitivo" (estou a trabalhar).
