The Pretérito Perfeito Simples (Regular Verbs)
In Portuguese, the pretérito perfeito simples is the main past tense for completed actions. It works like the English simple past.
How to form it
Regular verbs follow predictable patterns based on their ending:
- -ar verbs (falar): falei, falaste, falou, falámos, falaram
- -er verbs (comer): comi, comeste, comeu, comemos, comeram
- -ir verbs (dormir): dormi, dormiste, dormiu, dormimos, dormiram
Example: "Ontem eu trabalhei o dia todo." — Yesterday I worked all day.
Example: "Ela comeu pizza ao jantar." — She ate pizza for dinner.
Time expressions
- Ontem — yesterday
- Na semana passada — last week
- Anteontem — the day before yesterday
These time markers tell your listener you are talking about a finished past event.
