# Critical Thinking in Korean
The Socratic method — questioning premises, examining assumptions, and building logical arguments — translates naturally into Korean academic discourse.
-ㄴ/는다고 해서 (Just because … doesn't mean)
Use this to challenge an assumption or expose a logical fallacy.
- 비싸다고 해서 품질이 좋은 것은 아니다. → Just because it's expensive doesn't mean it's high quality.
- 다수가 찬성한다고 해서 옳은 것은 아니다. → Just because the majority agrees doesn't make it right.
-(으)ㄹ 필요가 있다 (It is necessary to)
Signals a logical imperative — what must be done in an argument.
- 전제를 먼저 따져 볼 필요가 있다. → It is necessary to first examine the premise.
- 이 추론의 타당성을 검토할 필요가 있다. → It is necessary to review the validity of this reasoning.
전제를 따지다 (To examine / challenge premises)
Core Socratic vocabulary.
- 그 주장의 전제가 옳은지 따져볼 필요가 있다. → We need to examine whether the premise of that argument is correct.
- 논거의 근거를 따져보면 결론이 달라진다. → If we examine the grounds of the argument, the conclusion changes.
Logical structure vocabulary in use
- 귀납적으로 보면 — inductively speaking
- 연역적으로 볼 때 — when viewed deductively
- 이 논거의 함의는 — the implication of this argument is
- 반론을 제기하자면 — to raise a counterargument

आम गलतियाँ
비판적으로 생각한다고 해서 항상 옳다비판적으로 생각한다고 해서 항상 옳은 것은 아니다The pattern '-ㄴ/는다고 해서' requires a negating conclusion; omitting '것은 아니다' makes the sentence incomplete.
전제를 따진 필요가 있다전제를 따질 필요가 있다'-ㄹ 필요가 있다' requires the prospective form '따질', not the past modifier '따진'.
그 주장이 근거가 없다고 해서 무시해도 된다그 주장이 근거가 없다고 해서 무시해도 되는 것은 아니다'-ㄴ/는다고 해서' sets up a disclaimer; the conclusion must clarify the consequence does not automatically follow.
논리를 점검할 필요가 있는다논리를 점검할 필요가 있다'있다' is an adjective; it does not take the verbal present tense ending '-는다'.
증거가 많다고 해서 진실이다증거가 많다고 해서 진실인 것은 아니다When using '-다고 해서' to warn against hasty conclusions, the result clause should express that something is not necessarily the case.
