# Grammar: 반면에 — Expressing Contrast
반면에 means "on the other hand" or "whereas." It is used to contrast two facts or situations, and is very common when discussing cultural differences.
- 한국에서는 어른에게 두 손으로 물건을 드려요. 반면에 서양에서는 한 손으로 줘도 괜찮아요.
(In Korea you give things to elders with both hands. On the other hand, in Western culture one hand is fine.)
You can also use 게다가 (moreover / in addition) to add a related point:
- 한국은 집단주의 문화예요. 게다가 나이에 따른 예의도 매우 중요해요.
(Korea has a collectivist culture. Moreover, age-based etiquette is also very important.)
Combining both connectors helps you build nuanced, B1-level discussions about cultural observations.

한국에는 어른에게 두 손으로 물건을 드려요한국에서는 어른에게 두 손으로 물건을 드려요Use 에서, not 에, to mark the place where an action happens. 에 marks a destination or existence, but giving something is an action.
처음 한국에 왔을 때 문화 충격을 받았어처음 한국에 왔을 때 문화 충격을 받았어요받았어 is casual 반말. In polite 해요체 you need the -요 ending: 받았어요. Don't drop 요 with people you're not close to.
한국은 집단주의 문화예요, 반면에 일본은 집단주의 문화예요한국은 집단주의 문화예요, 반면에 미국은 개인주의 문화예요반면에 means 'on the other hand' and must contrast two different things. Both sides being 집단주의 isn't a contrast — pair it with 개인주의.
저는 한국 생활을 잘 적응했어요저는 한국 생활에 잘 적응했어요적응하다 (to adapt) takes 에, not 을/를. You adapt TO something: 생활에 적응하다, not 생활을 적응하다.
관습이 달라서 가끔 친구를 오해돼요관습이 달라서 가끔 친구를 오해해요오해하다 is an action you do, so use 하다: 오해해요. 되다 (오해돼요) means it happens passively, which doesn't fit with the object 친구를.
