Writing a Professional Email: Formal -ㅂ/습니다 and 드리다
Korean professional emails use the formal polite speech level -ㅂ/습니다 and humble verbs like 드리다.
Formal endings -ㅂ/습니다:
- 안녕하십니까 — formal greeting (hello / good day)
- 문의드립니다 — I am making an inquiry
- 확인 부탁드립니다 — please confirm
Humble verbs (드리다 series):
- 드리다 — to give (humble for 주다)
- 말씀드리다 — to say/tell (humble for 말하다)
- 연락드리다 — to contact (humble for 연락하다)
- 보내 드리다 — to send (humble for 보내다)
Email structure:
- Opening: 안녕하십니까, [name/title]님 — Hello, [name]
- Body: 다름이 아니오라 — The reason I am writing is...
- Closing: 감사합니다 / 수고하세요 — Thank you / Take care
Tip: Never use casual -아/어요 endings in a professional Korean email. Always use -ㅂ/습니다 or -십시오.

आम गलतियाँ
보내주신 자료를 검토해요보내주신 자료를 검토하겠습니다In a business email you never use 해요체 (-해요). Switch to the formal 합니다체 and add -겠- for intention: 검토하겠습니다.
첨부 파일에 확인 부탁드립니다첨부 파일을 확인 부탁드립니다확인하다 takes a direct object, so the file needs the object particle 을, not the location particle 에: 첨부 파일을 확인.
빠른 시일 내에 회신해 줄게요빠른 시일 내에 회신해 드리겠습니다To a client use the humble 드리다, not 주다, and never the casual promise -ㄹ게요. Formal: 회신해 드리겠습니다.
답장이 늦으니까 죄송합니다답장이 늦어서 죄송합니다For apologies the cause uses -아서/어서, not -니까. -니까 sounds like making an excuse: 늦어서 죄송합니다.
