My Career Path: -ㄴ/은 적이 있다 (Have Experienced)

To talk about your career experiences in Korean, use -ㄴ/은 적이 있다 — meaning to have experienced or done something at some point in the past.

-ㄴ/은 적이 있다/없다

  • 해외에서 일한 적이 있어요 — I have worked abroad (before)
  • 대기업에 지원한 적이 없어요 — I have never applied to a large company
  • 면접에서 떨어진 적이 있어요 — I have experienced being rejected in an interview

Formation:

  • Verb stem + -ㄴ 적이 있다 (if stem ends in a vowel): 가 + ㄴ 적 → 간 적
  • Verb stem + -은 적이 있다 (if stem ends in a consonant): 먹 + 은 적 → 먹은 적

Talking about career goals:

  • -고 싶어요 — want to: 승진하고 싶어요 (I want to get promoted)
  • -(으)ㄹ 계획이에요 — plan to: 이직할 계획이에요 (I plan to change jobs)

Tip: When discussing your career in an interview, use 저는 ~ 적이 있습니다 for formal speech.

आम गलतियाँ

  • 저는 대기업에서 지원한 적이 있어요
    저는 대기업에 지원한 적이 있어요

    지원하다 marks its target with 에, not 에서. 에서 is for where an action happens, but here the company is the destination you apply to.

  • 저는 자격증를 따고 싶어요
    저는 자격증을 따고 싶어요

    자격증 ends in a consonant, so the object particle is 을, not 를. Use 를 only after a vowel.

  • 면접에서 저는 최선을 다하겠어요
    면접에서 저는 최선을 다하겠습니다

    In a job interview you keep the formal 합니다체. 다하겠어요 (해요체) feels too casual here, so use 다하겠습니다.

  • 경력이 많고 아직 승진하지 못했어요
    경력이 많지만 아직 승진하지 못했어요

    You need a contrast here (lots of experience BUT no promotion), so use -지만, not the neutral list connector -고.

  • 작년에 부장으로 승진됐어요
    작년에 부장으로 승진했어요

    승진하다 is the natural verb for getting promoted. 승진되다 sounds passive and unnatural, so say 승진했어요.
