Negotiating: -았/었으면 좋겠다 Conditional Proposals
In Korean negotiations, you express wishes and proposals using -았/었으면 좋겠다.
-았/었으면 좋겠어요 (I wish / I would like it if...)
- 가격을 조금 낮춰 주셨으면 좋겠어요 — I would like it if you could lower the price a bit
- 조건을 다시 검토해 주셨으면 좋겠어요 — I would appreciate it if you could review the conditions again
- 합의가 빨리 됐으면 좋겠어요 — I hope we can reach an agreement soon
Making counteroffers:
- 대신에 ~ 하면 어떨까요? — Instead, how about ~?
- 대신에 납기일을 늘려 주시면 어떨까요? — Instead, how about extending the delivery deadline?
- ~은/는 어려울 것 같아요 — ~ seems difficult
- 그 가격은 어려울 것 같아요 — That price seems difficult
Polite refusal:
- 그 부분은 조금 어렵습니다 — That part is a little difficult (polite no)
- 저희도 최선을 다하겠습니다 — We will also do our best (shows goodwill)
आम गलतियाँ
조건이 다시 검토해 주셨으면 좋겠어요조건을 다시 검토해 주셨으면 좋겠어요검토하다 is transitive, so 조건 takes the object particle 을, not the subject particle 이. Use 조건을.
다음 회의에 가격을 협상합시다다음 회의에서 가격을 협상합시다For an action happening AT a place, use 에서, not 에. 에 marks a destination or static location, 에서 marks where the action occurs.
계약 조건에 동의해요계약 조건에 동의합니다In a formal business negotiation, use the formal -ㅂ/습니다 ending. 동의합니다 sounds professional; 동의해요 is too casual here.
가격은 비싸서 품질이 좋아요가격은 비싸지만 품질이 좋아요You are contrasting two ideas (expensive BUT good quality), so use -지만. -아서/어서 means 'because', which gives the wrong meaning.
가격을 조금 더 낮추셨으면 좋겠어요가격을 조금 더 낮춰 주셨으면 좋겠어요When asking the other side to do something FOR you, add -아/어 주다. 낮춰 주셨으면 shows you are requesting them to lower it; without 주다 it just states a fact.
