The Highest Keigo

At C2 level, you must master the most elevated forms of Japanese honorific language. Japanese keigo operates on multiple levels beyond the standard sonkeigo/kenjōgo distinction.

Supreme Honorifics (最高敬語)

These forms are reserved for the Imperial family and the most formal contexts:

  • 仰せになる — the supreme honorific for "to say," used exclusively for emperors and deities
  • 召し上がる — honorific for eating/drinking, appropriate for distinguished guests
  • 御覧になる — honorific for viewing, used in formal announcements

Humble Language II: Teichōgo (丁重語)

Teichōgo differs from standard kenjōgo. While kenjōgo humbles oneself relative to the listener, teichōgo simply adds formality without implying a hierarchical relationship:

  • 参る vs 行く — "to go" in teichōgo vs plain form
  • 申す vs 言う — "to say" in teichōgo vs plain form

Beautifying Language (美化語)

美化語 adds elegance through the お/ご prefix system. At C2, you must distinguish which words take お (native Japanese) versus ご (Sino-Japanese):

  • お花 (native) vs ご意見 (Sino-Japanese)
  • Some exceptions exist: お電話, お料理 despite being Sino-Japanese

Mastering these layers allows you to navigate any social situation in Japan with perfect linguistic appropriateness.

Extremely polite preface: excuse me, but...
Please review (formal business letters)
To have someone review a document (humble)
To receive your esteemed consideration
To receive your kind assistance
Please accept this small gift (humble)

参る is humble (kenjōgo), not honorific. Using it for a teacher is self-contradictory — use いらっしゃる instead.

申す is humble speech about yourself. For a customer (respected), use the honorific

お食べになる is grammatically possible but unnatural. 召し上がる is the standard honorific for eating.

奥様 already contains built-in respect. Adding お creates a double-honorific error (二重敬語).

ご〜する is humble form. Asking someone to do something with humble form is contradictory.
