Past Progressive: ていた
- ていた — describes what was happening: 主人公は自分の過去と向き合っていた。 (The protagonist was confronting their past.)
Experience: たことがある
- たことがある — "have experienced": 村上春樹の小説を読んだことがある。 (I have read a Murakami novel.)
Nostalgia: ものだ
- ものだ — recalls past habits with nostalgia: 子供の頃はよく図書館で本を読んだものだ。 (I used to read books at the library as a child.)
Directional Change: ていく / てくる
- ていく — change moving away/forward: 物語はだんだん暗くなっていく。 (The story gradually gets darker.)
- てくる — change approaching the present: 最近、文学への関心が高まってきた。 (Recently, interest in literature has been growing.)

आम गलतियाँ
小説を読むことがある。小説を読んだことがある。たことがある requires past tense (読んだ), not dictionary form (読む).
子供の頃は本を読むものだ。子供の頃は本を読んだものだ。Nostalgic ものだ uses past tense (読んだ), not present (読む).
物語はだんだん暗くなっていった。物語はだんだん暗くなっていく。When describing an ongoing trend use ていく (present). ていった is for a completed change.
関心が高くなってきた。関心が高まってきた。For abstract concepts, use 高まる (to rise/heighten), not 高くなる.
主人公が過去を向き合っていた。主人公は過去と向き合っていた。向き合う takes と (face with), not を. Also は for topic marker.
