Understanding News Headlines in Japanese

Japanese news uses special grammar patterns. At B1, focus on these:

受(う)け身(み)形(けい) — Passive Voice (〜られる)

Commonly used in news to describe events objectively.

  • 新(あたら)しい法律(ほうりつ)が発表(はっぴょう)された。 (A new law was announced.)
  • 犯人(はんにん)が逮捕(たいほ)された。 (The criminal was arrested.)

Formation: Group 2 verbs → 食べられる, Group 1 → 読まれる, する → される

〜によって (by / by means of)

Indicates the agent in passive sentences or the method.

  • この問題(もんだい)は政府(せいふ)によって解決(かいけつ)された。 (This issue was resolved by the government.)

〜ことになった (it has been decided)

Reports decisions made by organizations.

  • 来月(らいげつ)から新(あたら)しいルールを導入(どうにゅう)することになった。 (It was decided to introduce new rules from next month.)

आम गलतियाँ

  • 犯人が逮捕しました。
    犯人が逮捕されました。

    In news reports, use passive されました (was arrested), not active しました.

  • 新しい法律が政府を発表された。
    新しい法律が政府によって発表された。

    The agent in passive sentences uses によって (by), not を.

  • 会議は来週にすることになった。
    会議は来週することになった。

    来週 is a time word that does not take the particle に.

  • この記事が読まされた。
    この記事が読まれた。

    読まされた is causative-passive. The passive of 読む is 読まれた.

  • 彼は警察に捕まれた。
    彼は警察に捕まった。

    捕まる is already intransitive (to be caught). It does not take passive form.
