Prepositions of place

In Italian, several prepositions are used to indicate location and give directions. Mastering these is essential for navigating a city.

Basic prepositions of place:

• vicino a : near — vicino alla piazza (near the square)
• lontano da : far from — lontano dal centro (far from the centre)
• di fronte a : opposite — di fronte alla stazione (opposite the station)
• tra / fra : between — tra il museo e il ristorante (between the museum and the restaurant)
• dietro : behind — dietro la chiesa (behind the church)
• accanto a : next to — accanto al bar (next to the café)
• davanti a : in front of — davanti alla farmacia (in front of the pharmacy)
• a destra di : to the right of — a destra del cinema (to the right of the cinema)
• a sinistra di : to the left of — a sinistra della banca (to the left of the bank)

Prepositions combine with definite articles (preposizioni articolate):

• a : il → al, lo → allo, la → alla, l' → all', i → ai, gli → agli, le → alle
• di : il → del, lo → dello, la → della, l' → dell', i → dei, gli → degli, le → delle
• da : il → dal, lo → dallo, la → dalla, l' → dall', i → dai, gli → dagli, le → dalle

Examples:

• vicino al museo (a + il)
• di fronte alla stazione (a + la)
• accanto all'ufficio (a + l')
• lontano dal centro (da + il)

Giving directions:

• Vada dritto. → Go straight. (formal)
• Giri a destra / a sinistra. → Turn right / left. (formal)
• È qui vicino. → It's nearby.
• È a cinque minuti a piedi. → It's five minutes on foot.
