Elevated Register in Hindi: Sanskrit-Derived Language
Hindi has two main vocabulary layers: तत्सम (tatsam — words borrowed directly from Sanskrit) and तद्भव (tadbhav — words evolved from Sanskrit through Prakrit). At C2 level, mastery of tatsam vocabulary is essential.
Literary inversions (साहित्यिक व्युत्क्रम) shift standard SOV word order for poetic emphasis:
- Standard: राम ने पुस्तक पढ़ी।
- Literary: पुस्तक राम ने पढ़ी — the object is foregrounded.
Subjunctive mood (संभावनार्थ) expresses doubt, possibility, or wish:
- चाहे वह आए या न आए — "Whether he comes or not"
- ऐसा हो सके — "May it be possible"
Archaisms enrich literary writing. Terms like अद्यावधि, तथापि, यद्यपि are rarely spoken but ubiquitous in classical prose and formal documents.
Key distinction: formal Hindi (शुद्ध हिंदी) avoids Urdu-derived words, while साहित्यिक हिंदी embraces Sanskrit roots. Both journalistic Hindi and legal Hindi (राजभाषा) lean heavily on Sanskrit.
