Critical Proofreading in Hindi

Proofreading Hindi text requires attention to Devanagari-specific challenges that don't exist in Latin scripts. At C1 level, you should catch subtle errors that even native speakers sometimes miss.

Common Devanagari pitfalls:

मात्रा (mātrā) errors: Confusing ि (i) and ी (ī) changes meaning entirely. दिन (din — day) vs. दीन (dīn — humble/poor). Always verify short vs. long vowel marks.
अनुस्वार (anusvār) vs. चंद्रबिंदु (chandrabindu): The nasal dot ं indicates a nasal consonant before a stop, while ँ nasalizes the vowel. हंस (hans — swan) vs. हँसना (hãsnā — to laugh).
नुक्ता (nuqtā) dots: Hindi uses dots under letters for Urdu-derived sounds: ज़ (za) vs. ज (ja), फ़ (fa) vs. फ (pha). Missing nuqtā changes pronunciation.

Gender agreement checks:

Verify adjective-noun agreement: अच्छी लड़की (acchī laṛkī — good girl) not अच्छा लड़की
Verify verb agreement: लड़कियाँ गईं (laṛkiyāṅ gaīṅ — girls went) not लड़कियाँ गए

Postposition consistency:

Check that compound postpositions are complete: के बारे में (ke bāre meṅ) not just के बारे or बारे में

Conjunct consonants: Verify that ligatures render correctly — क्ष (kṣa), त्र (tra), ज्ञ (jña) are commonly mistyped.
