Past Continuous + Past Simple in Hindi
Use this combination to describe a news story:
Past Continuous sets the background: verb stem + रहा/रही था/थी
वह चल रहा था। — He was walking.
Past Simple interrupts: verb stem + आ/ई/ए (perfective)
तभी दुर्घटना हुई। — Then the accident happened.
जब...तब / तभी — when...then
जब वह जा रहा था, तभी बारिश शुरू हुई। — When he was going, it suddenly started raining.
जबकि — while
जबकि वे काम कर रहे थे, बिजली चली गई। — While they were working, the power went out.
वाक्यांश
- जब यह हुआ, वह वहाँ थाWhen it happened, he was there
- दुर्घटना के समय वे जा रहे थेAt the time of the accident, they were going
- एक गवाह ने बताया किA witness said that
- बचाव दल तुरंत पहुँचाThe rescue team arrived immediately

आम गलतियाँ
वह चल थावह चल रहा थाPast continuous needs रहा/रही — the verb alone cannot form this tense
जब मैं घर पहुँचा, जब बारिश हो रही थी।जब मैं घर पहुँचा, तब बारिश हो रही थी।The correlative जब needs तब (or तभी) in the second clause — doubling जब is not standard Hindi.
दुर्घटना कियादुर्घटना हुईदुर्घटना (accident) takes हुई (happened), not किया (did)
गवाह बतायागवाह ने बतायाबताना is a transitive verb — the subject needs ने in past tense
