Imperatives for Instructions and Safety
When explaining DIY tasks or giving step-by-step instructions in Hindi, the imperative mood is essential. Hindi has three levels of politeness.
Imperative forms (verb: करना → to do):
- Formal (आप): कीजिए — Instructions to strangers, written guides
- Neutral (तुम): करो — Friends, mild commands
- Intimate (तू): कर — Very close friends, self-reminders
Sequential imperatives (step by step):
- पहले बिजली बंद करो, फिर तार बदलो। — First turn off the electricity, then replace the wire.
- पाइप साफ करके फिर जोड़ो। — Clean the pipe, then connect it.
Negative imperatives (don't):
- बिजली चालू रहते काम मत करो। — Don't work while the electricity is on.
- अकेले भारी सामान मत उठाओ। — Don't lift heavy things alone.
Expressing warnings with ध्यान रखो / सावधान रहो:
- ध्यान रखो कि दरार और न बढ़े। — Make sure the crack doesn't spread further.
For written or formal instructions (manuals, notices), use the आप form: कीजिए, लगाइए, बदलिए.

आम गलतियाँ
बिजली मत बंद करो काम करते वक्त।बिजली चालू रहते काम मत करो।The negative मत goes directly before the verb. Restructure the sentence so मत precedes the main verb.
पहले करो साफ पाइप, फिर जोड़ो।पहले पाइप साफ करो, फिर जोड़ो।In Hindi, the object typically comes before the verb. पाइप साफ करो, not साफ पाइप करो.
ध्यान रखो दरार और न बढ़े।ध्यान रखो कि दरार और न बढ़े।After ध्यान रखो, use कि to introduce the subordinate clause.
