Polite Modals: Making Requests & Complaints Tactfully
When dealing with neighbours, polite language is essential.
Polite requests with क्या आप...?
- क्या आप ज़रा आवाज़ कम कर सकते हैं? — Could you please turn down the noise a bit?
- क्या आप रात को पार्किंग की जगह छोड़ सकते हैं? — Could you leave the parking space at night?
Would you mind...? → क्या आपको कोई आपत्ति है अगर...?
- क्या आपको कोई आपत्ति है अगर मैं यहाँ पौधे रखूँ? — Would you mind if I put plants here?
Softening complaints with लगता है / शायद:
- मुझे लगता है शोर थोड़ा ज़्यादा हो गया। — I think the noise has got a bit loud.
- शायद हम कोई हल निकाल सकते हैं। — Perhaps we can find a solution.
Expressing a need politely:
- मुझे थोड़ी शांति चाहिए। — I need a bit of quiet.
- हमें मिलकर बात करनी चाहिए। — We should talk together.
Avoid direct accusations. Use लगता है, शायद, and question forms to keep the tone respectful.

आम गलतियाँ
क्या आप आवाज़ कम करो?क्या आप आवाज़ कम कर सकते हैं?Using the imperative करो sounds rude with आप. Use the polite modal कर सकते हैं instead.
मुझे लगता है कि तुम शोर करते हो।मुझे लगता है शोर थोड़ा ज़्यादा हो गया।Directly blaming the neighbour is confrontational. Use impersonal phrasing to soften the complaint.
क्या आपको कोई आपत्ति है कि मैं संगीत बजाऊँ?क्या आपको कोई आपत्ति है अगर मैं संगीत बजाऊँ?Use अगर (if) not कि (that) to introduce the hypothetical condition.
