The Second Conditional in Hindi: Negotiating Hypothetically
Hindi's second conditional (counterfactual) is ideal for polite negotiation — making offers, discussing scenarios, and proposing compromises.
Structure: अगर + subjunctive, तो + conditional
- अगर आप यह शर्त मान लें, तो हम आगे बढ़ सकते हैं। — If you were to accept this condition, we could move forward.
- अगर वेतन थोड़ा अधिक हो, तो मैं यह प्रस्ताव स्वीकार कर सकता हूँ। — If the salary were a bit higher, I could accept this offer.
Subjunctive forms (verb root + ए/एँ):
- मानना → मान लें (you accept)
- होना → हो (it be)
- मिलना → मिले (it is given)
Polite conditional responses:
- तो हम एक समझौते पर पहुँच सकते हैं। — Then we could reach a compromise.
- तो शायद हम फिर से बात कर सकते हैं। — Then perhaps we could talk again.
Expressing a counter-offer:
- हमारी तरफ से एक प्रस्ताव यह है कि… — Our proposal is that…
- क्या आप इस पर विचार करेंगे? — Would you consider this?
The subjunctive in Hindi (मान लें, हो) signals politeness and hypothetical possibility — perfect for professional negotiations.

आम गलतियाँ
अगर आप यह शर्त मानते हैं, तो हम आगे बढ़ सकते हैं।अगर आप यह शर्त मान लें, तो हम आगे बढ़ सकते हैं।The second conditional (hypothetical) requires the subjunctive मान लें, not the habitual present मानते हैं, which describes a real/current fact.
अगर वेतन अधिक होता, तो मैं स्वीकार करता।अगर वेतन थोड़ा अधिक हो, तो मैं यह प्रस्ताव स्वीकार कर सकता हूँ।होता/करता is the past counterfactual (third conditional). Use present subjunctive हो + सकता हूँ for a polite open hypothetical at B1.
हमारी तरफ प्रस्ताव यह है।हमारी तरफ से एक प्रस्ताव यह है कि…तरफ requires the postposition से: हमारी तरफ से. Also add एक before प्रस्ताव and complete with कि + clause.
