Formation: Konjunktiv II auxiliary (hätte or wäre) + past participle. Example: Hätte Kant das gewusst, hätte er anders argumentiert. (Had Kant known this, he would have argued differently.)
Philosophical use: This mood is everywhere in thought experiments. Was wäre geschehen, wenn die Aufklärung nicht stattgefunden hätte? (What would have happened if the Enlightenment had not taken place?)
Key nuance: You can omit wenn by inverting subject and verb: Hätte er das Dasein ergründet... instead of Wenn er das Dasein ergründet hätte...
This structure lets you formulate counterfactual hypotheses elegantly — a core C1 competency.
