Relative clauses with prepositions add specific detail about places and customs.
Preposition + relative pronoun:
- Das Land, in dem ich lebe, ist sehr vielfältig. (The country in which I live is very diverse.)
- Die Stadt, aus der er kommt, ist klein. (The city he comes from is small.)
- Der Tisch, an dem wir sitzen, ist reserviert. (The table at which we sit is reserved.)
Comparing cultures:
- Im Vergleich zu Deutschland ist es in Spanien lauter. (Compared to Germany, it is louder in Spain.)
- Während man in Japan Schuhe auszieht, behält man sie in Europa an. (While one takes off shoes in Japan, one keeps them on in Europe.)
Key: The preposition determines the case of the relative pronoun: in dem (dative), für den (accusative).
