"Es gibt" (There is / There are)
Use es gibt + accusative to say something exists:
- Es gibt einen Garten. — There is a garden. (masc.)
- Es gibt eine Küche. — There is a kitchen. (fem.)
- Es gibt ein Badezimmer. — There is a bathroom. (neut.)
- Es gibt drei Zimmer. — There are three rooms. (plural)
In meiner Wohnung gibt es zwei Schlafzimmer. — In my apartment there are two bedrooms.
Local Prepositions
- in — in (in der Küche — in the kitchen)
- auf — on (auf dem Tisch — on the table)
- an — at/on (an der Wand — on the wall)
These prepositions use the dative case when describing location:
- in dem = im (im Wohnzimmer — in the living room)
- an dem = am (am Fenster — at the window)
