Present Tense (Präsens)
Regular verbs follow a simple pattern. Remove -en and add the ending:
- ich -e: ich mache, ich koche
- du -st: du machst, du kochst
- er/sie -t: er macht, sie kocht
- wir -en: wir machen
Ich stehe um sieben Uhr auf. — I get up at seven o'clock.
Er arbeitet von neun bis fünf. — He works from nine to five.
Separable Verbs (Trennbare Verben)
Some German verbs split into two parts in a sentence:
- auf|stehen → Ich stehe um 7 Uhr auf.
- an|fangen → Wir fangen um 8 Uhr an.
- fern|sehen → Er sieht abends fern.
The prefix goes to the end of the sentence!
